Director of Fort New Salem

The director reports to the board of directors and works closely with the executive committee and the fund raising committee. This individual will manage the daily operations of the Fort as a working museum and be responsible for the staff and all assets and resources of the Foundation. The director will also act as chief budget officer and is responsible for an expected annual operating budget of about $200,000. The director will be expected to raise part of the annual budget through the creation and development of fund raising activities.

The duties of the director will include, but not be limited to the following: administration of fund raising, budgeting, supervision of the maintenance of the physical plant and capital improvements, public relations, marketing, merchandising, inventory acquisition and control, human resources, Web site administration, fiscal accountability, internal control, legal liability issues and long range planning in the areas of tourism and economic development and such other duties as may be determined by the Foundation Board of Directors and are deemed necessary.

Qualifications for the positions are:

  • Bachelors degree, (preferably in history, museum studies, non-profit management,     business, public administration or marketing, graduate degree a plus) and preferably a     minimum of 5 years successful experience in management, non-profit, museum or tourism     related fields.
  • Track record in fund raising and development.
  • Budgetary experience.
  • Experience supervising personnel.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with museum staff, a diverse volunteer work force and     external support organizations.
  • Capable of representing the foundation as an ambassador in the areas of public relations,     fund raising, public speaking, written correspondence, donors relations and volunteer     recruitment and retention.

    It is also preferable that the candidate has a demonstrated knowledge or willingness to become familiar by personal study on:

  • Repair, construction and maintenance of 19th century log structures.
  • Late 18th, early 19th century trades, arts and lifestyles.
